FAQ
Three very different places, and the choice changes the trip. The Mesoamerican Reef off Puerto Morelos sits inside a protected national park with shallow, calm water — the friendliest option for first-timers. The underwater sculpture museum near Isla Mujeres puts you over submerged statues colonized by coral. And cenote snorkeling swaps salt water for freshwater caverns, with visibility that feels like floating in air.
You need to be comfortable in water, but you don't need to be a strong swimmer. Life vests are included and required on reef trips, and the vest keeps you floating with no effort, so your job is just to breathe through the tube and look down. Guides stay in the water with the group. If you're nervous, tell your guide at the briefing — they'll keep you close.
Visibility is generally best in the drier months and after several calm days, since wind and rain stir up sediment. Mornings usually beat afternoons because the sea is flatter before the day heats up. Reef conditions are decided by the port authority, so if the port closes for weather, the tour moves or is rescheduled — safety call, never ours to override.
